Landspace and Population
New South Wales (NSW) occupies 801,600 km2 (10.4% of the total Australian landmasses). NSW population is 6.82 million, or 34% of all Australians. In 2006, approximately one quarter of people living in NSW (23%) were born overseas, and it is home to more than 300,000 Chinese. Half of all Chinese language speakers in Australia live in NSW (48% in Sydney) and Mandarin and Cantonese are spoken in nearly equal proportion.

History and Culture
Aborigines migrated to the Australian continent at least 40,000 years ago and became the first inhabitants of NSW. Captain James Cook sailed the entire length of the east coast in 1770, claimed the continent for the British and named it New South Wales. Australia became a nation when federation of the separate colonies took place on 1 January 1901. NSW is the most populous state of the federation and has its own unique culture that reflects the ethnic and cultural diversity of the many migrants who have settled there.

Economy and Industry
NSW Gross State Product (GSP) is US$239billion in 2005-06, accounting for approximately one third of Australia's Gross Domestic Product. GDP per capita was US$35,046.
NSW total exports and imports of goods and services in 2006 was worth US$100.5 billion, accounting for 30.4% of Australia's total. China was NSW's largest international trading partner overall in 2006, 4th largest export destination (US$1.7 billion) and largest source of imports (US$9.4 billion). NSW GSP is forecast to grow 2.5% in 2007/08 (NSW Treasury). Services form 74% of NSW's economy, followed by manufacturing (11%) and primary industries (4%). Sydney hosted the most successful Olympic Games in history in 2000.

Establishment of Sister Province/State Relationship
On 1 September 1979, Mr. XI Zhongxun, Governor of GD and the Hon. Neville Wran, Premier of NSW signed the Agreement to establish the GD-NSW Sister Province Relationship, the first of its kind for GD.
New South Wales hosted the 21st biennial NSW-Guangdong Joint Economic Meeting (JEM) in Sydney on 7 December 2006.  There were around 140 business and government representatives in the Guangdong delegation led by Mr. Chen Shaoji, Chairman of Guangdong Provincial Committee of The Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).
